The problem
The chain is fine until it is on screen.
A player, a scaler, a matrix, two hundred metres of cable and a projector. Every element works. The question is whether they work together, at the frame rate the show actually runs at, with the audio still where it belongs.
You find out during rehearsal, in front of people, or you find out an hour earlier with a file made for exactly that.
The answer
Files that make the fault visible.
A set of test patterns for the checks that matter on an event: audio and video sync, frame rate playback, colour bars. Play them through the chain as it will be on the night and read the result off the screen.
The sync pattern makes an offset countable rather than arguable. The framerate pattern shows a dropped or doubled frame as a break in the motion instead of a feeling that something is not quite right.
